Does CBD Show On Drug Tests? Here’s What The Research Says

CBD oil seems to be the wonder solution capable of dissolving chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia, and other common ailments.

As CBD products become increasingly available in convenience stores, health shops, and other retail locations, many Americans are opting to give them a try.

However, some weary consumers fear CBD oil could cost them their jobs. After all, it’s difficult to find a clear answer to the all-important question: does CBD show on drug tests? Let us help shed some light on the subject.

Marijuana

To understand why taking CBD oil may sometimes result in failing routine drug tests, one must first recognize its connection to marijuana. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “Marijuana—also called weed, herb, pot, grass, bud, ganja, Mary Jane, and a vast number of other slang terms—is a greenish-gray mixture of the dried flowers of Cannabis sativa.” CBD also comes from the cannabis plant; however, the two compounds are used for very different purposes.

People typically turn to marijuana in hopes of attaining a high. Consumers use vehicles like bongs, joints, edibles, vaporizers, etc. to ingest the drug which contains a mind-altering chemical known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, THC for short.

THC is found in the resin of cannabis leaves and works by manipulating receptors in the human body’s endocannabinoid system.

Marijuana is often put to both medical and recreational use, but it is still illegal in most US states. Thanks to its concentration of THC, “It stimulates the part of your brain that responds to sources of pleasure, like food and sex. That lets loose a chemical called dopamine, which causes the high,” states WebMD.

The drug is most commonly credited with causing feelings of relaxation, heightened senses, changes in one’s perception of time, increased anxiety or irritability, and hallucinations. Although, these symptoms are different for everyone and vary based on the strain of marijuana and its potency.

CBD

Like marijuana, CBD is derived from the cannabis plant, and it does primarily work by affecting the body’s endocannabinoid system which regulates elements like a person’s mood, appetite, memory, and perception of pain. Unlike its controversial cousin, however, CBD does not elicit the sensation of feeling high.

According to echoconnection.org, “Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is a natural, non-psychoactive concentrate extracted from the stalks and seeds of cannabis plants like hemp.” The solution undergoes extensive processing to extract pure oils and eliminate toxins.

During extraction, “To extract all the desired materials, a solvent is forced through the ground hemp plant material. This pulls out the CBD, essential oils, lipids, and beneficial compounds. The solvent is then removed from the final product, yielding oil that is naturally high in CBD.” Ideally, labs should conduct thorough testing of the resulting oils to verify their safety and purity.

Unfortunately, many states do not regulate the production of CBD, and that oversight has led to a sort of manufacturing free-for-all when it comes to CBD products. While West Coast producers face strict regulations, extractors and CBD companies operating on the East Coast, for example, are free to bottle and sell virtually whatever they want without testing against objective safety or purity standards. The result, many consumers don’t really know what they’re getting, and that is a dangerous reality.

Still, many people are willing to take the risk in order to reap the numerous benefits CBD oil has to offer. In fact, an article in Forbes Magazine says, “Cannabidiol, otherwise referred to as CBD is considered by a growing number of Americans to be the best thing since sliced bread.” It is commonly associated with the potential to relieve pain, reduce anxiety and depression, alleviate cancer symptoms, clear acne, improve sleep, and more.

While none of these claims are officially backed by the FDA, many consumers use CBD on a daily basis. However, others are skeptical and fear giving the oil a try may result in their being fired from their jobs.

Drug Tests

Why? Forbes’ piece “Marijuana Madness: This Is How CBD Oil Can Cause A Failed Drug Test” explores the answer. The author warns that although CBD oil itself should not yield positive results during drug tests, many products still contain trace amounts of THC. Even miniscule amounts of THC, less than 0.3 percent, can cause consumers to test positive.

The article also stresses that unregulated production is largely to blame, stating,

It is due to the inconsistencies associated with the manufacturing of CBD products that makes it impossible for the consumer to know what they are getting their hands on. Since none of the CBD products sold over the counter have been approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it is relatively easy for pseudo cannabis companies to skimp on testing and other important quality controls. In some cases, these products are not CBD at all.

Factors like a person’s daily dosage and absorption of CBD products may also put them at varying risks for false positives. The article explains,

It is not common for CBD users to turn out a positive drug test for THC. Yet, sometimes when patients are consuming in upwards of 1,000 milligrams per day, it can trigger a false positive. The average CBD user typically only consumes between 120 to 160 milligrams daily. Still, Consumer lab president Tod Cooperman, whose company tests natural supplements like hemp-based CBD, says around 10 percent of those people who use CBD can test positive for THC. So, ‘it can happen,’ he said. ‘It also depends on not just the product, but some people metabolize CBD differently,’ he added.

There is much scientists still have to learn about the specifics of CBD oil and the human body, but overall, the most important thing customers can do to avoid them is to research the products they choose to use. Consumers should look for CBD businesses that are transparent about their safety and purity testing policies. Finding products that are clearly labeled “Zero THC” or “THC Free” can also give customers peace of mind if they expect to be subjected to routine drug tests either at work or on the job search.

Precautionary Measures

Understandable, even with the assurance of no THC and certified lab testing, some people are still too skeptical to risk failing a drug test. With news reports like this local story from Indiana surfacing regularly, consumers aren’t sure the benefits of using CBD will outweigh the potential consequences.

To ensure avoiding any accidental mishaps, communicate with your employer or other drug test administrator in advance that you are taking CBD oil and that there is potential for a false positive.

For added security, consider talking to your doctor and getting some official documentation that you are using CBD oil to relieve the symptoms of a medical condition. By taking these steps, you can be confident that no matter what your test results show, your honesty and professionalism will be well-received.
